We came out with 5 strong possibilities for the direction of the project:

1. Mural in the wall space

Emily is looking to have the wall space painted ASAP.

2.Frames

Artworks in frames around the ward.

Dawn spoke about using the large wall space as a focal point and the additional stuff is a further development. Emily said the more the better, as at the moment she is using blue tacked images.

3. Sandbox.

Due to weight and size, Dawn and Emily were keen to keep this in the day room. Including items within the sandbox, such as light and shells.

4. Bed markers.

Not on the end of beds, due to the likelihood of them being covered up. Above the beds, but be mindful of the lights.

5. Trolley.

Having something accessible for everyone would be a really great addition for the ward and the patients as some are not as mobile as others, we need to consider the materials that are added to this trolley- and how it could be a useful product.

Things to avoid in our designs:

Faces.

Sea / Ocean scenes.

Protruding artwork from the walls.

Too much texture / cleanliness issues

Fabric, as this would be one use.

Both Emily and Dawn were enthusiastic about having one or more of the above ideas being created for the ward.

Further notes on the ideas:

- FRAMES: 20-30 frames with sketches or illustrations of garden scenery, nature, garden animals; these would be located on the walls throughout the ward. Frames would be needed to be clear pvc/acrylic in order to replace the glass due to health and safety. These could be made or found frames – but again be mindful of the glass and these are to be mounted with mount-strips onto the walls not with nails.

- SANDBOXES:To be located in the day rooms - sand, shells and other objects that are relatable to the scenery, with a little rake, which will be used to design/ draw different shapes in to the sand. These could be also installed with lights underneath it too, which would add another sensory effect to it.

- TROLLEY: This would be really useful for them to have, the trolley itself could just be a bought item, but to add different items onto it which we could make- something that is tactile- adding a sound system onto to it, so they can make events with it and it adds another sensory element to it.

- BEDFINDING:Something to consider in relation to the laser cut wood in different shapes, these could be attached above the beds. Something that the light could also play part in, so the patients can see it more clearer, than it being hidden underneath things that are sometimes hung over the bed rails.

- MURAL:There is a whole wall by the entrance that Emily has said we could work on, to create a natural/ garden scenery onto it- with some sort of materials that we need to consider- such as vinyl or similar to those natural scenes that Giedre has found. Nothing too abstract as patients are not going to respond as well as they would if something was more narrative based.

This is the wall space for the Mural on the Ward:
